What We Learned Digging Wells in the Dry Season
August 24, 2026 · By Sarah Kim
Six months ago our team set out to drill three wells in villages outside Machakos. We finished two, hit rock on the third, and learned more than we expected about the pace of real relief work.
The first well took eleven days. The second took six. The third is still not finished, and that has been the hardest lesson of all — that the timeline you plan for is rarely the timeline you get.
What hasn’t changed is the reception. Every dedication has looked the same: children running ahead of the adults, someone bringing out a drum, and a pastor praying over water that will outlast all of us. That part never gets old.
